I Stopped Building Frontends. Now I Use MCP Servers to Let AI Run My Apps

Not in theory. Not someday. It's happening right now.

I used to spend hours wiring up UIs, gluing together components, and chasing pixel-perfect layouts. Then I discovered something that made me rethink everything I knew about app development:

Traditionally, a frontend acts as a bridge between the user and these APIs.

But now, thanks to something called MCP (Model Control Protocol), that bridge is disappearing.

MCP allows you to turn APIs into agent-controllable tools. An AI agent, powered by large language models like GPT-4o or Claude 4, can now speak directly to your app's internal and external APIs.

It doesn't just consume endpoints. It orchestrates them.

Think about it: If an agent can invoke any function in your application via an API, what is the frontend really for?

From Developer to Conductor: Programming with Agents, Not Screens

The game-changer came when I discovered how to wire up MCPs to AI agents.

Here's the high-level process:

1. Wrap your API as an MCP server.
2. Expose it locally so agents can interact with it.
3. Attach it to an AI agent using libraries like mcp-use****.
4. Configure the agent to invoke the right tools on demand.

I started with something simple: a weather app.

Instead of building UI components or adding routes, I follow these steps:

Let's walk through the full setup using the OpenWeatherMap API.

• Open Postman then go API Network Section in top
• Search for the API: I open Postman and search for "OpenWeatherMap" in the API network. Once I find the correct listing, I select all relevant endpoints (like current weather, forecast, and weather history) and click on "Add Requests" to import them into my workspace.
